If you’re going to see Sex and the City this weekend

I am beyond excited to see SATC, as is almost everyone I know. I prepared by watching season 2 all over again (it’s my favorite). In a discussion among some very smart women I know, one theme emerged: young women, we fickle and elusive voting targets, are more excited about the premiere of SATC than we are about most things. So wouldn’t this be a great opportunity for a voter registration drive? The smart folks at mobilize.org are ready to help moviegoers register this weekend! Read on, and if you’d like to register voters, it’s really simple. Just click here.

Washington, D.C.— With hordes of young women lining up at their local theatre across the country this weekend for the much awaited premiere of the movie “Sex and the City,” the staff of youth civic engagement organization Mobilize.org decided to stand in line with these ladies, clutching what is to become the new fashion staple this election season: clipboards with voter registration forms.

Mobilize.org announced today their “Sex and the City…and a Side of Voter Registration” campaign to encourage young women to register to vote in this critical election. According to “Every Woman Counts,” in the 2008 election, young single women are poised to be a huge voting bloc. Ninety-three percent of the women polled said they planned to vote in the 2008 Election, and sixty-two percent of women polled believe voting in this election is more important than in previous elections.

Starting tomorrow, May 30, Mobilize.org’s network of young volunteers will be standing in line at the movies registering youth under the age of 30 for the 2008 election. The organization rallied its thousands of members this morning to connect with their counterparts online across the country, part of Mobilize.org’s Democracy 2.0 campaign to empower Millennials to develop creative strategies to effectuate change at the local level. “Sex and the City…and a Side of Voter Registration” is a simple way for young women to engage members of their own community in the democratic process.

“One of the things that has rivaled my passion for politics and activism this election year is the question of whether Mr. Big and Carrie get married, and I am thrilled to ‘marry’ my two passions this weekend in our ‘Sex and the City…and a Side of Voter Registration’ campaign. This is an exciting opportunity to reach out to women and convince that last 7% of them to come out and vote, an easy task given the high percentage of woman who already have committed to voting in the next Presidential Election – 93%,” commented Chief Executive Officer Maya Enista on the campaign.

Recognizing that many young females are not only looking up to female politicians, but celebrity icons like the women from Sex and the City, Mobilize.org, led by female CEO Maya Enista, CIO Christina Gagnier, and VP of Grassroots Organizing Katelyn Archer, and Program Associates Katie Taylor and Kaelan Kennedy thought this campaign would be a creative way to engage their Millennial counterparts.

75% of pro-choice voters need to know the truth: John McCain does not support a woman’s right to choose

April 2, 2008 · Filed Under Feminism, Internet Media, Politics · Comment

Among McCain’s pro-choice women supporters, 50% don’t know his positions and an additional 25% assume his views are in line with their own!

Catherine Morgan asked: “Is John McCain a Pro-Choice Republican? Would you vote for him if he was? There seems to be a lot of confusion over whether or not John McCain is pro-choice or pro-life. Why is that”?

I agree, Catherine, but we need to work to end this confusion. McCain has stated (it’s on his website) he thinks Roe V Wade should be overturned. If you are pro-choice it is your job to tell the truth about John McCain! McCain owes much of his success among independents and moderates because of glowing press coverage about his bi-partisanship and McCain’s success at creating a false sense of his principles. But on choice, McCain’s record is really, really anti-choice. Not only anti-choice: anti sex ed, anti emergency contraception, anti women. A new poll from Planned Parenthood shows:

In fact, about half of these pro-choice McCain voters (50% in a match-up against Obama and 52%
in a match-up against Clinton) volunteer that they do not know enough to even
describe McCain’s position on abortion and roughly another one in four (23% in
either contest) mistakenly presume that he is in step with their own views.
Thank you, Catherine, for raising this issue and while I’m not a single issue voter by any means, choice is very important. We are dangerously close in the Supreme Court to a majority that would overturn Roe v Wade. The next president will have the power to make an appointment that would create an anti-choice Supreme Court. We can’t let that happen.

Why aren’t Paulson or Bernanke on Meet the Press?

March 16, 2008 · Filed Under Politics · Comment

We all know what happened Friday.

Why does Russert have two Clinton/Obama surrogates on Meet the Press to talk bullshit about the campaign rather than dealing with the major tumult happening in our economy?

Nicco and my Dad (who lived through the Great Depression) did a podcast to talk about economic depressions, and what we’re facing now.
