Anil Dash: “You Can’t Start the Revolution from Inside the Country Club”

September 4, 2012 · Filed Under Feminism, Internet Media, women and work

Does reinventing Facebook to take our data out of the hands of advertisers simply replicate old class and gender exclusions? I’ve always written that one of the incredible powers social media gives women is the access to new networks- the old, closed networks of the boys’ club feel less closed. Anil Dash points out the constant evolution of web communities favors the privileged male:

In today’s world, where the social web is mainstream, innovating on the core values of tools and technology while ignoring the value of inclusiveness is tantamount to building a gated community. Even with the promise that the less privileged might get a chance to show up later, you’re making a fundamentally unfair system.
